Tinnitus – What is it? How can I prevent it?

Over seven million people in the UK are living with tinnitus, research shows, with figures set to soar before 2030.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that 7.1 million people aged 17 to 99 are suffering with the sensation, which causes ringing, buzzing, and humming in the ear.

This is set to rise to 7.7 million by 2028, according to the ONS.

With over one million GP consultations taking place every year in the UK, and treatment costing the NHS over £750 million,  clearly tinnitus is an issue which is only set to grow, and create even more pain and upset for those suffering with it.

With this in mind, Minerva Hearing is speaking out about how to prevent the potentially debilitating sensation.

Causes

A common cause is exposure to loud noises, when hair cells in the ear become damaged due to exposure to loud noise. Depending on the volume and exposure to the noise, this can occur in some cases after significant exposure or over a prolonged period.

Tinnitus can also arise as a result of numerous lifestyle or medical issues, such as hearing loss, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, anxiety, depression, and as a side effect of antibiotics or chemotherapy drugs.

Ear infections, and wax build up can also be contributory factors, with ear wax removal suggested to help tackle the issue.

Effective hearing protection is an ideal solution to help prevent this avoidable damage to our ears from loud noise.

Prevention

When it comes to tinnitus, you shouldn’t suffer in silence.

It’s time to speak up and get help, because there are plenty of ways to minimise the impact and stop the ringing.

Whether it’s getting ear wax removed, speaking to a GP, or getting ear plugs to protect against loud noises, there’s a solution for you.

At Minerva Hearing, we have a range of plugs to protect your hearing with plugs than incorporate high-fidelity acoustic filters, allowing your ears to hear the sounds you want to hear whilst reducing the overall volume.

Excessive ear wax is a debilitating condition which is a cause of tinnitus as well as temporary deafness causing isolation from social situations and day to day life.  Health services are under constant pressure and often appointments are not available for weeks into months.   We offer a fast and effective ear wax removal service, either in the comfort of your home, or in our Cardiff office.
